A new chapter is opening for the automotive industry, that of the electric. In the midst of a pandemic, and while the automotive market collapsed, that of electric vehicles grew by 140% in Europe, ahead of that of China. In France, the Renault Zoé has moved from twentieth to ninth place among the preferred vehicles in one year. Its sales have almost doubled to exceed 37,000 copies.

We knew the year 2020 was a pivotal year for electricity, but the scale of the increase, driven in part by the health crisis, was surprising. Incentives for consumers and CO2 targets for manufacturers also enabled these good figures. Germany, a European driving force in the adoption of the 100% electric or hybrid car, has seen its market share of plug-in vehicles increase from 3% in 2019 to 13% currently.

Manufacturers’ factories release a range of models for all budgets. However, the production of batteries and the equipment in fast charging stations remain the challenge to support this conversion. Some are calling for a battery Airbus in Europe, a project that could be doubled by relocations when everything comes from Asia currently. While much remains to be written, the electric revolution is finally underway in the automobile.
