People often think that appliances can be used until they are broken, but in fact, each type has a certain “retirement age”.
There is a secret that home appliances manufacturers rarely tell consumers that they only calculate their products are performing best in a reasonable period of time. After this time, the item may still be “usable”, but has reduced its function significantly and should be replaced.
Brightside has researched and recommended the time to replace household appliances as follows.
Toilet brush: every 6 months
The toilet brush should be cleaned immediately after you clean the toilet. You also need to replace them, at least every 6 months.
Mattresses (sleeping mattresses): every 8-10 years
While the removal of a mattress / mattress depends on the type and quality of the product you use, the general rule is to buy a new mattress every eight to ten years. You should also consider other factors like allergies, waking up muscle stiffness, or spring noise to see if your current mattress needs to be removed.
Shower head filter: every 2-6 months
Depending on how often your family uses the showerhead and the type of filter, or how many people share the same showerhead, you will have an accurate answer on when to change the showerhead. In general, however, you should at least change it after 6 months, or after the tap has filtered about 10,000 gallons (about 38 m3) of water.
Washing machine: every 10 years
On average, a washing machine can be used up to the 10th year. However, it depends on the quality, how often you use it in a day and how much load per use.
Bathroom carpet: every 2 years
Bath mats should be washed every other week. In case your house is crowded, you share bathroom with other people, you should wash weekly. However, as a general rule, they need to be replaced every 2 years.
Dishwashing pads: weekly
It sounds surprising, but it is. If your home does not use a dishwasher, and you use kitchen sponges several times a day, it is best to buy bulk cleaning pads to replace them regularly.
Carpet room: every 10 years
Even when properly washed, carpets still need to be replaced when they are “out of date”. Manufacturers estimate that you will need to replace your entire home carpet after about 10 years.
Dishwasher: every 10 years
You should “retire” your dishwasher if it has been with your family for a decade. Also, the reasons that you should change your dishwasher even if it hasn’t been 10 years include it doesn’t work well, the cost of repairs exceeds 50% of the price of a new dishwasher.
Refrigerator: every 15 years
If your refrigerator is under 8 years old and has problems, you may consider fixing it. But if it is more than 15 years old, you better replace it with a new refrigerator.
Sofa: every 7-15 years
You may feel it is not necessary to change the sofa unless you redecorate the house or move to a new place. However, the lifespan of a sofa is only 7 to 15 years. When the fabric / sofa leather is frayed, it is best to replace it with a new one. You can choose to re-wrap the sofa if its structure is still good.
